SPAD's Food Group
The food group meets regularly (often in the Star), if you want to find out more about this or other SPAD activities then see the contacts page. SPAD welcomes more people getting involved in activities locally!
The food group started a Food Week initiative in 2012 inviting people to grow their own food and to use the local shops. In June 2012 in conjunction with the monthly Community Market that had been running for a few months, Food Week was launched in the precinct with all the Community Market stalls and local media coverage. The following year Food Week focussed on using the local shops and issuing loyalty stamps to encourage people to shop locally. In 2014 the focus was on surplus produce swaps and buying local. The Co-op in the precinct helped to support this event and the results of SPAD's questionnaire on the local Co-op were shared with the organisation's senior management. We hope to work with the Co-op to improve the provision of locally grown food in their store and to encourage more people to shop in the village.
The current focus of the food group is to join the “Incredible Edible” movement and develop public spaces for growing food. The aim is to continue to encourage people to grow their own food and raise awareness about the link between global warming and food shortages. This group is also campaigning to improve the local food shopping.
Earlier this year Claire Eggens from SPAD led a spring foraging walk starting from the local allotments. Claire also led a forest gardening walk in 2014.
